A lot of people hear the words “economic development” and automatically think about business, finance, or large projects.

But the reality is, building strong communities takes people with many different skills, interests, and career paths.

That’s one of the reasons Mi'gmawei Mawiomi Business Corporation (MMBC) encourages students from all fields of study to apply for the Scholarship & Bursary Program each year.

Economic development is connected to much more than people may realize.

Our communities need teachers, nurses, tradespeople, entrepreneurs, artists, environmental workers, accountants, engineers, communications professionals, IT specialists, heavy equipment operators, social workers, project managers, business owners, and many others.

Every career and every skillset plays a role in helping communities grow and succeed.

Not every student will follow the same path, and that’s something worth celebrating. Some students may leave for school and return home to work in the community. Others may build businesses of their own, work in regional industries, or bring back knowledge and experience in different ways over time.

The Scholarship & Bursary Program is meant to support youth as they work toward their goals, whatever those goals may be.

It’s also about encouragement.

Sometimes students may not realize that their community believes in them or wants to support their future. Even small forms of support can help someone feel motivated to keep going through school, training, or career development.

Over the years, it has been encouraging to see students applying from many different backgrounds and areas of study. That diversity matters because strong communities are built by people with different experiences, perspectives, and strengths.

MMBC’s hope is that more youth continue to apply, continue to explore different opportunities, and continue to see that there is a place for them in helping shape the future of our communities in their own way.

The 2026 MMBC Scholarship & Bursary Program will be opening soon. Students are encouraged to keep an eye on MMBC’s social media channels and website for upcoming details on eligibility, deadlines, and how to apply.
