Re-introducing MMBC

You may have heard the name Mi’gmawei Mawiomi Business Corporation (MMBC) before, but we know it’s not always clear what we actually do.

MMBC is a Mi’gmaq-owned business organization. Our job is to help create and manage business projects that make money for our Mi’gmaq communities, now and in the future. We don’t run social programs, and we don’t make political decisions. We focus on business and economic development.

Who We Work For

MMBC works on behalf of three Mi’gmaq communities in Gespe’gewa’gi:

  • Gesgapegiag
  • Gespeg
  • Listuguj

Any major project we work on is meant to benefit these communities. That could mean long-term revenue, jobs, training opportunities, or funding that leadership can use for community priorities.

What We Actually Do

At its core, MMBC helps communities become owners in big projects, not just bystanders.

This includes things like:

  • Investing in and co-owning major projects (like renewable energy)
  • Making sure Mi’gmaq communities have a seat at the decision-making table
  • Bringing in long-term revenue that stays in the community
  • Supporting training and employment opportunities tied to those projects

We work with outside partners, but the goal is always Mi’gmaq ownership, control, and long-term benefit, not quick wins.

Why This Matters

Big projects are happening on Mi’gmaq territory whether we’re involved or not. MMBC exists so our communities can be part of those projects in a meaningful way, with real ownership, real influence, and real benefits.

Instead of short-term deals, we focus on projects that can support our communities for decades.

How We Try to Work

We know trust isn’t automatic. MMBC is still learning, improving, and listening. Our responsibility is to be clearer about what we do, share information when we can, and keep the focus on community benefit.

This re-introduction is part of that effort. MMBC exists to help build strong, self-sustaining Mi’gmaq economies for the next generation, and the ones after that.
