MMBC, in partnership with Nordex, recently held two Information Sessions to introduce community members to the Wind Turbine Technician career pathway connected to the Mesgi'g Ugju's'n 2 (MU2) Wind Project. Sessions were held on two separate evenings, the first in Gesgapegiag and the second in Listuguj. To support anyone who wanted additional context, we also shared a short introductory video that explains who Nordex is and the type of work the company does in the wind industry.

Introducing the Career Opportunity

As MU2 prepares for operations, Nordex will begin recruiting Wind Turbine Technicians from the region. During the sessions, Nordex representatives described the role and the qualities that make for a strong candidate.

The work involves mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, torque and tension checks, component replacement, scheduled and corrective maintenance, and ongoing reliability tasks. It requires a strong commitment to safety, good physical fitness, teamwork, and a willingness to learn.

Nordex also shared comments from current technicians across Canada who described supportive team environments, high safety standards, clear pathways for advancement, and fully covered training and work gear.

Training and Certification Requirements

Nordex provided a full overview of the training process for new technicians. All required courses and certifications are funded by Nordex.

Training begins with a ten day onboarding program at the Nordex Training Academy in West Branch, Iowa. This includes GWO Basic Safety Training, First Aid, CPR, Fire Awareness, Manual Handling, and an introduction to turbine safety.

After onboarding, trainees move through Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 technician development. This includes online learning, in-person instruction, and practical exercises. Nordex has a mobile maintenance training unit stationed in Canada that allows hands-on practice with generator alignment, lubrication systems, pitch and slipring work, blade and wind sensor alignment, and torque and tension simulations.

For those who want to further advance, Nordex offers expert-level courses in areas such as main converter systems, transformers, individual pitch control, and anti-icing technologies.

Supporting Local Workforce Development

These sessions reflect MMBC’s ongoing commitment to supporting training and employment opportunities within Gesgapegiag, Listuguj, and Gespeg. By partnering with Nordex, MMBC is helping create long-term career pathways connected to MU2 and to future renewable energy work across Gespe’gewa’gi.

Further updates on training sessions and recruitment timelines will be shared as they become available.
